  23. a) A few refinements and bug fixes.

  25. b) When changing to the parent directory, if the directory is empty
  26.    DESCRIPT.ION is deleted unless there is a note for the ".." entry.

  28. c) On all foreign keyboards, the <@-char> file search will now seek a file
  29.    starting with the proper character for all alphanumeric keys.

  31. Version 2U.2 (Sept-1-92)

  33. a) Debugging code had been left active, rendering the screen inactive with
  34.    MDA/HGC monitors.  Corrected.

  36. b) ^H now works in text input fields (backspace).

  38. c) Real colors rather than grey-tones are now used on the default color
  39.    display.  Can be changed on the configuration menu (hit <Alt-F10>).

  41. Version 2U.0 (Aug-10-92)

  43. a) Video segment now determined from video mode rather than type of monitor
  44.    detected.   Some monochrome VGAs and LCDs showed no display because they
  45.    actually were running in a color mode.

  47. b) If 4DOS is active and you are in file mode, the ^H command shows the 4DOS
  48.    selectable command-history window.  Unfortunately new commands you make
  49.    while shelled to 4DOS will not be added to the master history list, since
  50.    each shell has a separate list.

  52. c) Features to copy, move and rename marked files were very nearly but not
  53.    quite ready for this release, which was on a deadline to be included in an
  54.    ASP (Assoc of Shareware Professionals) disk mailing to vendors and BBSs.  By
  55.    the time you read this these marked file features should all be operational,
  56.    and if you register (or have already registered an earlier version) you will
  57.    be sent the improved version.

  59. d) <G*> key now functions properly when not used in drive:directory changing
  60.    situations.

  62. e) The note buffer is now cleaned-up after <ESC> from the rename command, etc.

  78. a) Bug fix.  Screen attributes for the logoff message were being written beyond
  79.    the end of the last screen line, causing problems if programs were loaded
  80.    high right behind the first page of video memory.

  82. b) A nicely printed manual is now available for registered users for $3.50
  83.    extra ($5 if ordered separately).

  86. Version 2T.6 (Jun-12-92)
  87. ========================
  88. a) When 4FILES is running under DESQview and is waiting for keyboard input, it
  89.    now returns its time slice during each loop, allowing more time for programs
  90.    running in the background.

  92. b) A bug which sometimes garbled command line fields (for copy, G**, etc.) was
  93.    fixed.

  96. Version 2T.0 (May-17-92)
  97. ========================
  98. a) Now MS-Windows and DESQVIEW aware!  (Works with OS/2 too.)

  100. b) Modified to work-around OptiMouse driver quirks.
  101.  
  102. c) The mouse is now disabled when making utility calls if 4FILES was invoked
  103.    via SHROOM, or if SWAPDOS is used to make the call.  When 4FILES' memory is
  104.    released, the mouse handler is likely to be overwritten by the program being
  105.    called, resulting in a crash if the mouse is bumped or used.  I forgot to
  106.    mention in the manual that the mouse should be disabled via the config
  107.    screen if 4FILES might be swapped-out, but now this is unnecessary if
  108.    swapping is done with SHROOM or SWAPDOS.  4FILES will eventually have
  109.    built-in EMS/XMS swapping, allowing the mouse to remain functional.
  110.  
  111. d) Returning from a utility call, the video mode is reset only if the number
  112.    of screen rows or columns (as obtained from BIOS data) has been changed.
  113.    This is for compatibility with utilities like PC-Magazine's EGA43.COM, in
  114.    which case a "simple" restoration of the original video mode actually causes
  115.    a change from the 80x43 to an 80x25 display.
  116.  
  117. e) Fixed problem with returning from utility calls with the /T/D switches set.
  118.  
  119. f) When calling .BAT or .BTM utilities, the filename & extension are now both
  120.    used (already the case for .COM/.EXE utilities) rather than just the name.
  121.    Also, utility calls are now attempted only if the utility port configuration
  122.    is for .COM, .EXE, .BAT, .BTM or .ALS.

  124. g) Re-enabling of character blinking for HGC, MDA and CGA monitors (at exit or
  125.    for utility calls) now works properly.

  130. a) In the configuration tail for a utility port, $N loads the current filename
  131.    without its extension in the utility, and $F loads the name with extension.

  138. a) /+ command line switch added to force video modes of over 80x25.  Needed for
  139.    HGC/MDA/CGA only.  Because of BIOS incompatibility of some of these cards,
  140.    80x25 is assumed unless the switch is set.

  143. Version 2S.0 (Mar-7-92):
  144. ========================
  145. a) The config menu has been rearranged so that SWAPDOS can be used to its best
  146.    advantage.  Utility names & command tails can be up to 30 characters.  To
  147.    use SWAPDOS, type its filespec into the utility field, and type the
  148.    filespec of the utility or application you wish to run under SWAPDOS in the
  149.    tail field, along with any command line switches for both SWAPDOS and the
  150.    program being called.  (SWAPDOS is shareware; it can swap 4FILES to EMS, XMS
  151.    or the hard disk.)

  153. b) Full filespecs are no longer needed in utility port configurations if the
  154.    program is in your PATH.  The file extension must always be given.
  155.  
  156. b) Help and the manual are now in separate files.  F1 displays help and
  157.    ^F1 displays the manual (the browser port must be correctly configured
  158.    first).

  161. Version 2R.0 (FEB-18-92):

  163. a) Total bytes used and marked in the current directory are shown on-screen in
  164.    File Mode in the upper right hand corner.  In note mode the 4FILES version
  165.    number is shown.

  167. b) Keyboard handler now compatible with HYPERKEY, PROKEY, NEWKEY and others.
  168.    NEWKEY must be configured to allow other programs to use Ctrl-ESC.

  170. c) Modified for proper keyboard action and list-sorting based on country
  171.    code and code page.  Setup is automatic for DOS 3.3+; otherwise enter the
  172.    code in the configuration menu.

  174. d) LCD.EXE (Led's Change Directory) and ACD now supported via a utility port,
  175.    allowing partial pathspecs in the <G*><G*> field.  New-Dir, Kill-Dir and
  176.    Rename-dir operations update the LCD/ACD path database.

  178. e) NEW KEY COMMANDS:

  180.    <G*><G*><G*> makes an immediate change to the previous drive:directory,
  181.    returning to the old cursor-bar position.

  183.    <^F2> utility port added (acts like <F2>).  Use it for a word processor,
  184.    alternate editor, or any utility you wish.  The <F2> denied extension list
  185.    (in the configuration) applies to <^F2> also.

  187.    ^X command added.  Similar to ^E, but provides instant execution.  If the
  188.    result of execution flashes off screen, reconfigure the "DOS Pause" switch,
  189.    or use ^E with the "++" flag.  ^X is ideal for use with 4DOS "executable
  190.    extensions".

  192.    <Alt-F9> command added to copy the _whole_ note to the buffer with one
  193.    keystroke.  Active only in Note Mode.

  195. f) Cut or copied note text can now be pasted into notes in any other drive or

  215. a) When quitting 4FILES under the new 4DOS-4, the cursor shape was changed to
  216.    an over-line.  A normal cursor now shows.
  217.  
  218. b) The new 4DOS-4 extended DESCRIPT.ION specification is recognized.  If an
  219.    extended file note is detected (no programs are using these yet) a warning
  220.    is given.  A future version will give complete support.
  221.  
  222. c) Modified to read file notes over 80-characters and give a warning.  Use
  223.    of over 40-characters is not recommended until 4DOS fully supports the
  224.    longer notes.  The specification for longer basic notes is being drafted.

  227. IMPROVEMENTS:

  229. d) Built-in configuration routine added (@-F10).

  231. e) A new utility port for archive files only is mapped to the <^G+> key.

  249. a) COPY, MOVE, and RENAME functions added.  These functions are very
  250.    rudimentary, and are stop-gaps for your convenience until V-3.0 is released.

  252. b) Video modes higher than 80x25 are now recognized automatically, and the /8
  253.    switch forces 80x25 mode if necessary.

  255. c) Deleting a file now requires a double-tap of "Y", to avoid accidents from
  256.    typing "dynamic", etc.

  285. Finding Future Versions
  286. =======================  The best keywords to look for are: 4FILE or 4FILES,
  287. The two strings are not equivalent on all BBS's, so you should try both to be
  288. sure you have found the latest version.  Other keywords to try are 4DOS, NDOS, 
  289. or FILE MANAGE.  Releases on BBSs will appear as 4FILES??.ZIP or 4FILE???.ZIP, 
  290. and a corresponding .INF information file may also be present.  A good search 
  291. string for the files would be 4F*.*, which will find both the .ZIP & .INF file.
  292.  
  293.     Since CompuServe supports only six-character filenames, releases there
  294. are always 4FILES.ZIP.  Periodically check the date or browse the CIS  
  295. description to see if your version is outdated.
